Aristotle once said: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit”.
What are you repeatedly doing?
We are nothing but the sum of our habits that we do every day. Every day.
Sure, we have done some excellent things, but how many people who have achieved amazing results in life have done those things just the once? Alisa Camplin, an Australian aerial skier, triple-twisted and double backflipped her way to victory at the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002. The jump took less than 60 seconds, and was the culmination of a ten year plan where Camplin consistently trained every day. On the ski mountain, when everyone else had gone in from the cold, Camplin stayed out and continued to train for another hour. This meant that by the time the Winter Olympics arrived, Camplin had hours and hours of EXTRA practice under her belt. More than any other aerial skier. Sure, she has talent and skill. The more she practised, the more talented and skilled she became.
What does that mean for my business?
What are you doing EVERY DAY? What are your habits? If we are indeed, what we repeatedly do, let’s think about the things we are doing on a regular basis and decide right now if they hare having a positive impact on our businesses.
If you have decided that you are going to blog every day, are you blogging every day? If you have decided that a blog post every week is best for your business, are you doing a bit of writing every day to ensure you meet this weekly target? Are you doing a little bit of Social Media every day or are you blasting your channels every few weeks? What do you think might be more valuable? Are you connecting with your customers?
Connect to your Big Why
You already know your Big Why. If you don’t, please do this. It will make all the difference. If you know why you are doing what you do, staying focused on those daily habits will be a cinch. How many times have you found yourself doing something and wondering what on earth you are doing? (Okay, that might just be me… At times…). When you have a Big Why, you can decide really quickly if that activity is serving you and moving you closer to your business goals.
Make a list right now of the 2-3 daily habits you could incorporate into your routine, that if done daily will move you closer to your business goals. It may be writing web content, updating your Social Media channels, following up two potential clients, going to one coffee catch up, going for a walk, the list goes on. Just pick two or three. Write them down and do them. Then let us know how you go!
To your success! On a daily basis!
